It's World Sickle Cell Day and we have a champion!!!! Can you guess who she is ?

I met this lady while working for a nonprofit organization in Osogbo some years ago and her spirit simply amazes me, she has so much drive and passion i sometimes question myself that if she can do what she has done why am i still on my A**.

She is living with Sickle cell and recently came out to declare herself on instagram and i was very proud of that. We all know a lot of people living with Sickle cell in Nigeria go to a lot of extents to hide their status and with due reasons. So it must have taken a lot of courage to come out and declare herself, which is why she is our champion today.

Meet and greet Miss Wemimo
Name: Awonaike Oluwawemimo Ifeoluwa

Educational status:Graduate. MSc (Industrial and personnel relations) in View from University of Ibadan
Status: Single
What were your challenges as a Sickle cell in the Nigerian education system?
I missed some test and Exams due to crisis and because of this I had to repeat a class in primary school. In secondary school no much challenge had little crisis. In University, little crisis until my final year the week I was to present my project had serious crisis. Had to sit to present. Thank God my lecturers understood me then.
Suggest ways that the educational system can be improved for people with Sickle cell
Teachers  especially primary and secondary school teachers should be educated about Sickle cell because they will come across  a kid with one and half of the time they don't know how to act with us.
The truth is that sicklers will want to do what others are doing the teacher should know how to handle such child and deal in such a way and manner sickle cell kids don't feel like an outcast.
what do you want people to know about sickle cell: The society should not place death sentence on us. We are not dying soon😄😄😄😄We are way stronger sometimes tha people with genotype AS and AA. 😊😊. Do not look at us with pity, rather encourage us
Thank You

It'S WOrld Sickle CeLL dAY

In a research carried out by Miss Kazzim Shiyanbola a Public health graduate from University of Ibadan she recommends that in other to help people with Sickle Cell we need to do the following;

  •     The government should fund and organize seminars in schools for parents/guardians, their wards, as well as others students on the importance of providing adequate care to Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) children
  •  Counseling sessions should be routinely organized by health workers for both the adolescents and their parents/guardians on clinic days.
  • Teachers as well as community members should serve as role models to none SCD adolescents on how to interact and socialise with SCD adolescents within and outside the school environment
  •  The Ministry of Health should carry out various educative programs on how to show care and support towards adolescents living with SCD and how to help them cope psychologically with living with the disease.
  • Adolescents should be enlightened on proper coping mechanisms to adopt in order to make living with SCD easy for them.
  • The government should focus on initiating basic person-centered psychosocial interventions at all levels where psychologists or social workers would be available to individuals.
