This statement was made by Dr S. Okaga (Family Planning/Reproductive Health Coordinator Lagos SMOH) at a 3-days training organised for media personnels by Pathfinder International in Lagos.

Youth and adolescents need to be aware of their “Right to Health” which the media needs to help spread. Often times societal values, cultural and religion have served as barriers to the access an average Nigerian unmarried youth and adolescent have to reproductive health services. This in turn result to the poor judgement they demonstrate in their sexual life.

Dr. Okaga  also urged media practitioners to always approach her office for confirmation and clarifications where necessary and to avoid reporting  any misleading health information as health is a very sensitive issue.

During the training the need to engage the people including youths and adolescents on getting reproductive health information and help them access Family Planning services if and when needed was clearly stated.

The role of the media to increase visibility of Family Planning stories and report was also stated in other to help reduce maternal mortality due to  lack of information and access to Family Planning.

Dr Habeeb Salami also emphasized the need for Media outlets to increase the visibility of Family planning stories to encourage more people take up the services in Nigeria.

Without fear or boundary there is need to expand access to contraception, promote healthy pregnancies, save women’s lives, and stop the spread of new HIV infections, going wherever the need is most urgent- Pathfinder International
