#Mothersyarn: Causes of Infection during pregnancy

After looking for a place to urinate for the fifth time in 50 minutes while doing some shopping at the main market, Bolanle knew it was high time to go and get some urine infection test done with the little cramps that comes with the urge to pee. This is not because of the "every 10 minutes urinating" but because of the unhygienic places she found herself using when the sudden urge to pee comes. She could recall a particular incident where she had to pee at a refuse dump after a visit to her local stylist salon and the sudden urge to go arose. Choi! If only she could carry her clean, well perfumed and sanitized home rest room around she will. Bolanle knew frequent urge to urinate is normal in pregnancy but what was not normal was the burning sensation and the foul smell that comes with it.

A chat with doctor revealed "Up to 10 percent of expectant moms will get a urinary tract infection (UTI) at some point during their pregnancies, according to the March of Dimes" The good news is that if a UTI is caught early it should be easy to treat with antibiotics. The bad news is if UTI is  not caught early it could lead to serious life threatening episode for both mother and child.

Some signs of UTI includes
  • Urinary urgency, meaning a quick and sudden urge to urinate
  • Pain or a burning sensation with urination
  • Foul-smelling or cloudy urine
  • Bloody urine
  • Pain in the pubic bone area
Bolanle was told not to panic as UTI are easy to treat even during pregnancy and after her test, antibiotics that are safe to use during pregnancy will be prescribed.
The doctor then went on to tell Bolanle that there are no fool proof in preventing Infections but by taking some preventive measures the chances can be minimized.
  • Practice good hygiene. wiping from front to back after urinating or taking a dump (shitting), change your underwear every 8 hours and wash and dry properly
  • Stay hydrated. Drinking a lot of liquids and urinating a lot can also help clear the urethra, make sure you empty your bladder completely after urinating.
  • Urinate before and after sex. This will help eliminate genital bacteria.
  • Watch your diet. yes you like your coffee and your chocolate but this food items can increase inflammation of the bladder and make bacteria wants to stick around
  • Drink cranberry juice. Cranberries can prevent E. coli from adhering to the bladder.
